MS in Statistical Science + MS in Stat with a Concentration in Data Science

Graduates of our master's in statistical science program develop rewarding careers. There are two options under this degree program: 1. MS in Statistical Science, 2. MS in Statistical Science with a Statistical Data Science Concentration, as well as other related options.

NEW: Statistical Data Science Concentration within the MS in Statistical Science

Statistical science is regarded as one of the most successful subjects. It focuses on extracting knowledge from data. In this graduate program, students are trained in the theory and practice of statistical methodology. It prepares students for statistics and data science challenges that arise in high-tech or general industries and government.

1. With an MS in statistical science, you can:

  • Develop models to find patterns in massive data sets.

  • Predict and optimize internet search results, advertisements, and website analytics.

  • Develop concepts for economic forecasts and perform simulations that help banks understand their level of risk.

  • Promote responsible statistical science in the federal government, industry, and public health.

Check the catalog for official degree and admission requirements.

2. The Concentration in Statistical Data Science within the MS in Statistical Science aims to prepare students for making contributions in statistical data science for positions in industry and government.

  • Students interested in pursuing this concentration are required to take five 3-credit required concentration courses (STAT 521, STAT 554, STAT 634, STAT 654, and STAT 663), three 3-credit methodology courses (such as STAT 572), and two 3-credit elective courses.

Other Related Options:

A. Admission to the accelerated MS program allows students to earn an MS in Statistical Science for 24 additional credits past their BS degree.

B. Our program offers two dual-degree MS programs that allow students to earn two MS degrees by completing 48 credits of coursework instead of the 60 that would be required if the degrees were sought independently. One dual-degree program is joint with an MS in mathematics; the other is joint with an MS in operations research.

C. We also offer a certificate.

The path to advanced education in statistics is just as diverse as the careers it can prepare you for, according to the American Statistical Association, which outlines the advantages of this MS degree.

Michael Collins, MS Mathematics and Statistical Science

Michael Collins, MS Mathematics and Statistical Science '18, says statisticians have a healthy level of skepticism for reported facts and figures. That’s a valuable set of skills in today’s world, he says.
