Academics

In this era of big data, earning a degree in statistics is a smart choice. Our world-class faculty and rigorous curriculum will give you the training and experience you'll need to be competitive in a high-growth field. Our graduates analyze data for industry, the government, and non-profit organizations.

Invest in Your Future with a Degree in Statistics

Our Department of Statistics, which is part of the School of Computing, offers degrees at all levels: a BS in statistics, an MS and a PhD in statistical science, and an MS in biostatistics. We also administer a multidisciplinary MS in data analytics engineering.

Our programs teach essential data analytics skills:

  • Our BS in statistics degree prepares you to become a statistician who can design studies, collect data, analyze and visualize large data sets, and then draw valid conclusions and communicate them.

  • Our Applied Statistics graduate certificate trains students in data analysis and statistical methodology. It provides a clear record of additional instruction in statistics for future graduate programs or employers.

  • Our MS in statistical science program trains you in the theory and practice of statistical methodology, exposes you to current and upcoming trends in statistical computing, and fosters the skills needed to collaborate with teams of diverse backgrounds and expertise.

  • Our MS in biostatistics program allows you to specialize in the design and analysis of health-related and medical studies while maintaining the rigor and technical training of the statistical science master's program.

  • Our PhD in statistical science represents the highest academic attainment for a statistician. Graduates from our department hold premier jobs in the pharmaceutical industry, the federal government, and academia.

  • The MS in data analytics engineering with a concentration in statistics seeks to prepare a new class of engineers that deploy an interdisciplinary approach of statistical science, computer science, systems analytics, coupled with fields such as finance, marketing, business intelligence, operations research, geoscience, or bioscience.

When you are studying with us, you will learn how to improve your research skills and discover new technologies. You will also establish a foundation for life-long learning, putting you a step ahead of your peers.

“The more statistics classes I took, the more interested I became. There is so much more to it than just finding the ‘P’ value. I like problem-solving.”

— Dillon Weier, BS Statistics '19

"Statistics degrees are ideal for people who want challenging and interesting careers. What could be better than collecting and analyzing data from some of the most important studies that impact humanity. Statistics is important for all aspects of science, government, industry, and society.”

— William F. Rosenberger, University Professor, Department of Statistics
