The Department of Statistics at George Mason University began in 1992 as the Department of Applied and Engineering Statistics. Since then, it has grown into a nationally recognized department with 21 core faculty, numerous adjunct and visiting professors, and over 140 undergraduate and graduate students across five academic programs.
Our Mission
The department fosters a strong research culture with strengths in statistics, biostatistics, and data science, and prioritizes excellent instruction through modern curricula and experiential learning opportunities.
Jiayang Sun, the chair of the Department of Statistics, is working to develop more research collaborations, create joint faculty positions with other organizations, recruit top faculty and students, and expand the department's curriculum.
We are committed to advising, mentoring, and supporting students, faculty, and the broader community while continuing to grow through strategic hiring and academic innovation. Our highest priority is preparing students for impactful careers and advancing the frontiers of statistical and data science.
