Student Opportunities

"Undergraduate research enhances student learning, builds relationships with faculty, increases retention, provides effective career preparation, develops an understanding of research methodology, and promotes critical thinking, creativity, problem solving and intellectual independence."

— David Holmes, professor of Statistics

At George Mason University, studying statistics goes beyond the classroom. Students gain real-world experience through research mentorship, national conference participation, and internships.

Undergraduate Opportunities

Travel Funding

George Mason offers several funding opportunities to support undergraduate and graduate students presenting their research at academic and professional conferences.

The Undergraduate Student Travel Fund (USTF) provides financial assistance for travel related to scholarly and research activities. In addition, the R. Clifton Bailey Student Travel Awards are available to both undergraduate and graduate students, helping cover costs associated with attending statistics conferences and enhancing their professional development.

The Office of Student Scholarship, Creative Activities, and Research hosts the annual student poster presentations in the Center for the Arts on the Fairfax Campus.
Research Takes Center Stage

The Office of Student Scholarship, Creative Activities, and Research (OSCAR) serves as a central hub for undergraduate students who want to get involved in research and creative projects across disciplines. Students can collaborate with faculty members on original research projects.

Competitions

Students are encouraged to submit their work to the Undergraduate Statistics Project Competition (USPROC), which celebrates excellence in statistical analysis and data storytelling.

Internships

The American Statistical Association (ASA) curates a list of internship opportunities for statistics students nationwide, helping them connect with employers. The George Mason chapter of the ASA connects students with professional and academic opportunities in statistics.
