The Department of Statistics, George Mason University, is sorry to report that Associate Professor Emeritus John Miller, 78, died unexpectedly on August 7, 2024. An expert in multivariate analysis, he taught at Rutgers and George Mason, retiring in 2016. John grew up in Utica, New York, and studied at the University of Rochester and Stanford University. At Stanford, he received a PhD in Statistics under T. W. Anderson. His early research was on new interpretations of regression analysis; later he worked on handwriting forensics with the National Institute of Justice.

John was a reluctant retiree, “taking the plunge” at age 70. But during those eight or so years after leaving, he welcomed his beloved grandchildren, traveled the world with his wife Kim, and shot his age (77) on Laurel Hill Golf Club last year. Two weeks before he died, he shot a 79, lamenting a missed putt for a second “shooting his age” record. He leaves his wife, two sons, and their families.

Statistics departmental admin team gets kudos Tama Moni Wed, 11/30/2022 - 10:45

Our departmental admin includes Admin and Office Specialist Amir Hasan, Office Manager Muntaka Jabeen, and part-timer Nawwaf Al Ghamdi.

The arrival of Hasan and Jabeen in the summer of 2022 has provided the department with the critical staff support that has been in shortage since the Fall of 2020. Al Ghamdi specializes in IT and webmaster support and will graduate this year.

The entire Statistics staff extends a heartfelt thank you to the administrative team and congratulates Al Ghamdi on his academic achievements.
